Why the US still uses Fahrenheit

The US (with a few territories and Caribbean countries) is one of the last places using the Fahrenheit scale for weather, cooking and medicine. Water freezes at 32 °F and boils at 212 °F, so one Fahrenheit degree is 5/9 of a Celsius degree. Thermometers sold in the US usually switch between °F and °C — look for a button or a setting.

FAQ

How do I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?

Subtract 32, then multiply by 5/9: °C = (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9. Going the other way, °F = °C × 9 ÷ 5 + 32. Quick mental math: (°F − 30) ÷ 2 is within 2–3 degrees for everyday weather.

What is 350 °F in Celsius?

350 °F = 176.7 °C, usually written as 180 °C (or 160 °C for a fan/convection oven) in metric recipes. It is the most common US baking temperature.

What temperature is a fever in Fahrenheit?

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the CDC treat 100.4 °F (38.0 °C) or higher as a fever. Normal body temperature is around 97–99 °F (36.1–37.2 °C); 98.6 °F = 37 °C. For babies under 3 months, any temperature of 100.4 °F or higher needs a call to the doctor right away.

When are °F and °C the same?

At −40: −40 °F = −40 °C.
